Work out how many pieces fit across your fabric width, divide the total pieces by that number to get the rows, multiply by the piece length, then divide by 36 to get yards. This calculator does it for you and rounds up.

Should I buy extra fabric?

Yes. Add extra for seam allowances, shrinkage, directional prints and pattern matching. Around 10 to 15 percent extra is a safe cushion for most projects.
